The Fallen Warriors Memorial and The National Memorial Ladies
THE FALLEN WARRIORS MEMORIAL
Houston City Council’s Service Project for 2017-2018 was proposed by Zeta Gamma Master in support of their member Donna McGrew whose son, Major Shawn M. Campbell, USMC, is honored at the Fallen Warriors Memorial for his ultimate sacrifice for our freedom when he was killed in a 2016 helicopter crash. This Memorial honors the fallen warriors from Texas who give their lives fighting for our freedom. It was dedicated in 2012 and was the inspiration of Houston City Council’s First Lady of the Year, Cheryl Whitfield, with support of the National Memorial Ladies which was also founded by Cheryl, Cy Champ PUD and innumerable others to ensure that their memories stay alive and their families remembered. A wonderful addition to the Memorial now being funded will honor military working dogs and other dogs who have helped our great nation.
The Fallen Warriors Memorial is located in a serene wooded setting in northwest Houston at 14500 Cutten Rd, Houston, TX 77069 (north of 1960 and south of Cypresswood). There is ample parking and seating while you reflect on the lives of those who have given all for our freedom.
FALLEN WARRIOR DOG PROJECT
A special note from Donna McGrew: “My son, Maj. Shawn Campbell, USMC, loved his golden retriever, "Maverick". I remember the day that Shawn brought the puppy to meet us. Shawn let Mav chew on his ears that day. Mav barked at himself in the curio cabinet mirror. Shawn's first child used to dance with joy at the window when "Mavvy" would come look at him. A couple of years later, as they were passing through Houston and stopped for a visit, I was out on the deck with Mav, when he decided that my long braid was a pull rope. He wouldn't let go, so I had to call for Shawn to come free me from that playful tug. Of this I am sure: Shawn would be delighted to have these two beautiful dogs near him, guarding the Fallen Warriors Memorial. If you listen closely, you can probably hear Shawn and Mav playing ball...waiting for the sculptures to be completed. Semper Fidelis.”

THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL LADIES AT HOUSTON NATIONAL CEMETERY
Cheryl Whitfield also founded the National Memorial Ladies organization which is a volunteer service at the Houston National Cemetery located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038. They attend all burials at the cemetery to ensure no soldier is buried alone... give a condolence card to the families, and affirm that they are there to give honor to their loved one who gave military service to our country. The Memorial Lady is a part of the ceremony. Along with the Chaplain and Honor Guard, she attends the burial with silent vigil. Two Ladies are in attendance Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
HCC sisters contribute yarn and crochet hats and scarves for warriors.
We also contribute funds to Wreaths Across America specifically for the Houston National Cemetery.
We hold silent auctions and a Giving Tree at our HCC Summer Social, Fashion Show, Sweetheart Ball and Founder's Day Banquet with the proceeds being donated to the Fallen Warriors Memorial.
